Mt. Meru Climbs

Towering over Arusha, Mt. Meru stands at 4556M (14,556 ft) above sea level.  Meru is an extinct volcano, and the summit is the remnants of the crater's western ridge.  The collapsed crater has a large ash cone that can be seen as you climb along the summit ridge.

Climbing Meru is not as glamorous as Kilimanjaro, but the summit is arguably more striking and memorable.  Whereas the summit of Kilimanjaro is large enough for a game of football, there is barely enough room for 6 to 10 people on Meru's sharp apex.  From here, you can watch the sun rise behind Kilimanjaro and the African plains.  Arusha slowly awakens beneath your feet as you descend.

Standard Meru Climb - 3 Days
From Arusha, we drive the short distance to Arusha National Park and make our way to Momella Gate.  Here we will meet our army escort/guide and begin our climb.

Together with a cook and porters, you will hike to Miriakamba camp and sleep in a dormitory style hut with comfortable mattresses.  The next day, after breakfast, we will climb to Saddle Hut.  Perched in the saddle between Meru and Little Meru (4,000m), the Saddle is our staging point for the summit push.

We will have lunch at Saddle Hut and rest.  If we have energy for an acclimitization hike, we will summit Little Meru in the afternoon.  After some hot drinks and dinner, it's early to bed.

We will wake up at 1am for a hot breakfast before beginning the summit push.  A tough 4 hour climb should put us on the summit for sunrise.

After summitting, we will descend the entire distance to Momella gate, breaking for a hot breakfast at Saddle Hut and a quick lunch at Miriakamba camp.

Extended Climb - 4 Days
This climb is the same as above, except that we will not descend the entire mountain after summitting.  Instead, we will return to Saddle Hut for another night above 4000 meters.  This is an excellent way to acclimitize your body if you are planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro next.
